WATCH: Explaining Why Eben Etzebeth’s Try Against Harlequins Stood
A clear analysis on why Etzebeth was in the right to steal the ball.
For anyone who watched the Champions Cup game between the Sharks and Harlequins at the Stoop, they would’ve undoubtedly been debating the try scored by Sharks lock Eben Etzebeth.
Just before half-time, as Harlequins scrumhalf Danny Care was setting up for a box-kick, and using a lengthened ruck as cover to prevent the kick from being charged down, Etzebeth broke out of the defensive line, snatched the ball from Care, and ran away to score.
Fans were debating whether Care had touched the ball or not, or if it had left the ruck, but the reason that gave Etzebeth the opportunity to attack had to do with the binding of the rucking players (Joe Marler in particular), not Danny Care. It was a moment of brilliance observation from Etzebeth.
