Some of the Worst Misses in Football History

We look at some of the most shocking sitters that went awry.

The top leagues have showcased some seriously impressive football in recent seasons, but as much skill as there is, from time to time, there’s also a complete lack of it. Even though they’re professionals and get paid a king’s ransom to play the sport, sometimes even the superstars have forgettable moments in front of goal – and we’re going to look at a few of the more glaring ones!

Eric Maxim Choupo Moting – PSG

After some great work down the wing by PSG’s Nkunku, it looked like there would almost certainly be a goal – but Choupo Moting’s strange touch (that didn’t look like it was meant to convert the ball) ended up bouncing off the post and out. This miss is made a little worse because if PSG had won this game (which ended up being a 2-2 draw) they would’ve won the league on the day.

Alvaro Morata – Spain

The Spanish striker has had some serious difficulties since he made a move from Real Madrid to Chelsea, and has since left Chelsea for Atletico Madrid. Luckily, this miss didn’t come for his club in an important game, but considering the fact that he had an open goal at his mercy, it’s still embarrassing for a striker of his quality not to convert the chance.

Cristiano Ronaldo – Manchester United

As is clear from the resolution of this clip this is from a decade ago – back when Ronaldo was playing in England for Manchester United. Even though this was before his consecutive Champion’s League winning days he was still an elite player, which makes this miss quite unbelievable. But, even the best can sometimes have lapses of concentration it seems, so us mere mortals shouldn’t feel too bad.

Romelu Lukaku – Manchester United

Despite a few hiccups in his career, Lukaku actually has a great skill to adapt well to different styles and managers. That being said, a £75m striker is expected to do better than this, and despite the attempt being at an angle he was under little pressure from any defender and should have shown more composure.

Sergio Aguero – Manchester City

City’s Aguero is fast becoming this generation’s most prolific Premier League strikers, but he had a moment to forget against Chelsea not that long ago. Completely miscalculating his direct (and admittedly too casual) shot, the Argentine ace completely missed the goal, leaving the Man City faithfuls stunned.
