Sonny Bill Williams vs Francois Botha boxing highlights
SBW holds on through a tough bout
On Friday, 8 February 2013, rugby star Sonny Bill Williams took on former South African heavyweight champion Francois Botha in a boxing match in Brisbane, with the World Cup-winning All Black coming out on top.
The match, expected to not last very long, went on through 10 rounds (allegedly reported to be 12 rounds prior to the fight). A unanimous decision by the judges saw Williams retain his WBA title.
The fight itself was relatively uneventful, with either party exchanging the odd clean jab or hook, but the fight reached a climax in the 9th and 10th rounds, where Botha’s resurgence had Williams on the backfoot.
The other combatant, Austrlian fly-half Quade Cooper, who fought SBW’s undercard, made an impressive transition to boxing, knocking out his opponent, Barry Dunnett, in the first round.
